It's time to take a look at the quilting trends that will be popular in 2025 as we begin a new year filled with stitching, quilting, machine embroidery and, let's face it, collecting fabric like it's a competitive sport. While some of these trends will make you nod in agreement, others may force you to step outside of your comfort zone—in the best way possible.
Before we get into it, don’t forget to check out our Brown Bag Mystery Kits! We pulled together fabrics for our Dealer’s Choice kits with an eye on the trends featured below. Some lean into minimalism, some go for maximalist color explosions—but each is, of course, a surprise!
1. Sustainable Stitching: Quilting With a Conscience
Quilters have always been thrifty—let’s be real, we were upcycling before it was cool. But in 2025, sustainability is more than just a buzzword; it’s a full-on movement. Expect to see more quilters turning to organic cottons, plant-based dyes, and salvaged fabrics (old shirts? Recycled denim? repurposed bedsheets? Yes, please!). Even batting is getting an eco-friendly upgrade, with recycled fibers making their way into our quilts.
Need to pad your scrap stash with eclectic extras? Check out our Kimberbell Mystery Scrap Packs (above) for great fabric pieces and trims.
Pro tip: A quick way to engage in sustainable stitching is with a fabric swap between friends. We all have fabric in our stash that we’ve outgrown or no longer love as much as we did when we first purchased it. Take stock of the stuff you no longer love and get together with friends to swap stashes!
2. The Return of Hand-Stitching (Because Slow is the New Fast)
Raise your hand if you’ve ever sworn at your sewing machine. Many quilters are rediscovering the peace and beauty of hand-stitching. Whether it’s big-stitch hand quilting, traditional Sashiko, or English paper piecing, there’s something deeply satisfying about slowing down and working with your hands.
Bonus? It’s portable! Quilt at the park, in waiting rooms, or while binge watching the latest docudrama.
Not ready to dive into hand stitching but interested in the gorgeous patterns of techniques like Sashiko? The Babylock Sashiko II Machine (above) replicates the ornate, delicate stitchwork seen in traditional Sashiko patterns!
3. Big, Bold, and Geometric—Because Subtle is Overrated
2025 is the year of quilts that make a statement. Think oversized half-square triangles, dramatic stripes, and multicolor masterpieces like the Sunflower Sparkle Fields Kit and Sunflower Sparkle Fruit Punch Kit (l-r above). Muted tones? Nope. This trend is all about electric blues, fiery oranges, and unexpected color combos.
Quilters are channeling their inner graphic designers, creating quilts that look straight out of an art gallery. If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to go wild with color and pattern, this is your moment.
We have several quilt kits and fat quarter bundles to help you craft your own dazzling statement quilt. Consider the Pivot Half Yard Bundle, the Florence Untamed Quilt Kit, or the Organics Batik Bundle (all seen below, starting clockwise from top).
4. Minimalism, But Make It Quilty
On the flip side, some quilters are embracing a “less is more” approach. Minimalist quilts focus on simplicity—clean lines, neutral palettes, and lots of negative space. Think of it as a deep breath in quilt form.
But don’t mistake minimalism for boring. When you strip a design down to its essentials, every detail matters. The perfect hand-quilted line, the precise contrast of fabric tones—it’s quilting at its most intentional.
And sometimes going minimalist with your fabric choices and design open up opportunities to go maximalist in other ways. Consider incorporating more edge-to-edge quilting techniques in your minimalist quilts to create an enhanced but subtle texture (see trend #6 below!). We have Edge to Edge Quilting classes throughout the year!
5. Colorblocked Quilts
One could say all quilts feature color blocking—we are quilting different fabric shapes in various colors, after all. But the colorblocked quilt trend focuses on featuring large blocks of color to highlight contrast, often using negative space to accentuate the graphic quality of the design.
The effect is modern and timeless—and rarely boring. The Color Wash Transparency Quilt (seen above) is a great example!
6. Texture, Texture, Texture
2025 is all about quilts that feel as good as they look. Linen, velvet, wool, even denim—quilters are mixing materials like never before. The result? Depth, dimension, and a quilt you won’t be able to stop running your hands over.
But it’s not just about varying your choice of fabrics. 3D elements are a fantastic way to elevate the texture of your quilts. Appliqué, trapunto, machine embroidery, and other quilted embellishments are enjoying increased popularity.

7. Improv Quilting: Where the Rules Don’t Matter
Forget precise points and perfect seams—this trend is all about quilting freely. Improv quilting is gaining serious momentum, with quilters embracing wonky angles, unexpected color pairings, and “whatever happens, happens” energy.
It’s liberating. It’s creative. And it’s a fantastic way to use up scraps without the stress of following a rigid pattern. If the thought of letting loose makes you nervous, just remember: some of the best quilts started as happy accidents.
