Upcycling refers to the repurposing of a discarded item or material, turning it into something new and exciting that is of better quality than the original item. The idea is to divert materials from the landfill, giving them a new purpose. Today we share our favorite tips, tutorials and projects for upcycling sewing projects.
First, train your eye to see the potential in items before you discard them, and create a space in your sewing room where you can store them for upcycling projects. If you’re new to upcycling, start by going through your closet and pulling out any items that no longer fit or are no longer being worn. Old clothes and sheets are definitely at the top of the list for materials to save and reuse, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box: coats, curtains, neckties and even plastic bags can be turned into something new and wonderful!
